Zum Gedenken an Herbert Walchshöfer

Zum Gedenken an Herbert Walchshöfer, dem Vater des Challenge Roth, sprach Susanne auf der Nudelparty des Challenge Wanaka ein paar offizielle Worte. Hier die Rede auf Deutsch und Englisch.

Als leidenschaftliche Triathletin aus dem Raum Roth, möchte ich für einen Moment um Ihre Aufmerksamkeit bitten. Wenn man in der Gegend um Roth lebt, ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass man beim Triathlon landet ziemlich hoch. Ganz speziell an einem Tag im Jahr sind wohl 99% der Menschen im Landkreis Roth in Sachen Triathlon unterwegs – und das nun schon seit … Jahren. Dass dieser Sport dort alle, Athleten auf der vollen, oder Teildistanz aber noch mehr Zuschauer, Fans und Helfer auf die Beine bringt, ist kein Zufall und auch keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Hinter dem jährlichen Triathlon Highlight Challenge Roth steht mehr als nur eine Organisation, die Ihren nur Job macht. Dahinter steht eine Familie –Familie Walchshöfer- und ein Team, die Ihr Herz und Ihr persönliches Engagement das ganze Jahr in Ihre Arbeit stecken. Davon profitieren vor allem wir, die Athleten. Mit der gleichen Menge an Herz und Leidenschaft hat Familie Walchshöfer und Ihr Team letztes Jahr den Challenge Wanaka ins Leben gerufen, der schon bei seiner Premiere auf Grund seiner familiären Atmosphäre, der Organisation  und einzigartige Kulisse sehr viel positive Kritiken bekommen hat.

Der Grund meiner Ansprache ist, dass das Jahr 2007 für die Challenge Gemeinschaft aber auch eine Schattenseite hat. Am … verstarb Herbert Walchshöfer, …Jahre Renndirektor und Gründer der Challenge Serie, nach langem Kampf gegen seiner schwere Krankheit. Der Triathlon verliert damit eine der leidenschaftlichsten Personen, die es geschafft hat auch im Zeitalter in dem der Kommerz bei vielen Veranstaltungen im Vordergrund steht, eine Rennserie zu gestalten, die sich durch Herzlichkeit, Fairness und ehrlicher Begeisterung am Wettkampfsport auszeichnet.

Der Tod Herberts war ein großer Schock für alle, die auf irgendeine Art und Weise mit dem Sport verbunden sind. Aber wir wissen, dass seine Familie – seine Frau Alice, Tochter Kathrin – und Sohn Felix der das Amt des Renndirektors beim Challenge Roth, und auch Wanaka übernommen hat, mit dem gleichen Engagement und  vor allem  Herzblut die Serie in seinem Sinne weitführen wird. Nicht in Herberts Sinn wäre es, dass das morgige Rennen die Färbung der Trauer und Traurigkeit erhält. Das soll nicht der Zweck meiner Ansprache hier sein –vielmehr möchte ich daran zu erinnern, wer dieses Rennen gegründet hat und wer ihm diesen Charakter gegeben hat. Wir werden morgen viele Stunden unterwegs sein – ich möchte als Athlet dazu aufrufen, während der vielen Stunden im Wasser, auf dem Rad und zu Fuß ab und zu –mit einem Lächeln im Gesicht- daran zu denken, dass hinter diesem Event eine Person stand, die leider Ihren eigenen Challenge verloren hat, aber durch unsere Gedanken an Sie und Ihre Arbeit für diese Serie weiterlebt!  Danke für ihre Aufmerksamkeit

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am a triathlete who lives here in the county of Roth and would like to take the opportunity to let you share some of my thoughts about the Challenge Roth triathlon:

If you live in the Roth region, the probability that you will get somehow involved in triathlon is quite high. There is one day each year when probably 99 % of all people in the county of Roth are on their feet because of triathlon – and this has been the case for 26 years now. It is no coincidence or matter of course that this sport has been attracting so many full or half distance athletes as well as spectators, fans and volunteers over the years here in Roth. What is behind every year’s triathlon event is more than an organisation that does its job. It’s the commitment of a family – the Walchshöfers – and a team who put all their heart and soul into the work they do all year long. And it’s us, the athletes, who benefit from this commitment. With the same passion, the Walchshöfers and their team initiated the Challenge Wanaka triathlon last year. The first race in Wanaka has earned a lot of praise for its friendly atmosphere, perfect organisation and extraordinary scenery.

But 2007 also had a dark side for the Challenge community. Herbert Walchshöfer, race director and founder of the Challenge series, died at 58 after a long fight against his serious illness. Triathlon lost one of its most passionate personalities. Herbert Walchshöfer managed to create a series of triathlon events which are marked by heart-felt commitment, fairness and honest enthusiasm for the sport, although nowadays commercial aspects seem to be given priority in so many triathlon events.

Herbert’s death came as a shock for all people who are involved in triathlon. But we all know that his family – his wife Alice, daughter Kathrin and son Felix – will continue the triathlon series with the same commitment, heart and soul as Herbert would have done, as Felix has now taken over the position of race director for the Challenge Roth and the Wanaka race.

After his lung transplantation in January 2005 the Challenge founder and organizer was in very poor health for months, but his brilliant mind did not want to rest. Since Herbert was a person who never could stay idle, he soon got actively involved again in the organization of the Quelle Challenge. Although still sick, he came up with new ideas, developed new strategies almost every day, sometimes to the exasperation of his family and team. If somebody asked him about his health in those days, he promised: “We will meet again at the finish line.” And he always kept his word: Herbert was there again at the 2006 Challenge.

In the following months he suffered repeated setbacks and had to stay in hospital several times, but Herbert Walchshöfer did not give up. In autumn 2006 he had again recovered a bit and made new plans and – typically for him - set himself ambitious targets. In summer 2007 he wanted to walk the Camino de Santiago.

But he did not get around to it any more, because his declining health upset his plans, although his mind remained as awake and keen as ever – until the very last minute.

Herbert Walchshöfer had a fighting spirit. He faced his illness with admirable courage and almost unbelievable endurance, made it through all the crises thanks to his tough will and great strength of character, and now returned to light.

But Herbert would not want tomorrow’s race to evoke a feeling of mourning or sadness. This is not supposed to be the aim of my speech. I would just like to remind you of who brought this race into being and gave this very special character to the event. Tomorrow we will be on our way for many hours. As an athlete I would like to call on you to let your thoughts wander during these many hours in the water, on your bike or on the running course, and think about Herbert every now and then with a smile on your face. He was the one behind this event and he lost his own challenge. But he will live on as long as we think about him and his work.

I would like to thank Herbert for the great job he did throughout the years. And I would like to thank Felix, who is a worthy successor, and TEAMChallenge for their commitment here in Roth and in Wanaka. It gives us athletes the chance to take part in competitions, in which fairplay and a friendly atmosphere come first.
